Children deserve a safe, fair and fun environment in which to play sports. They also deserve an environment that promotes their physical, psychological and emotional well-being. These are objectives that AYSO uses to create a quality youth soccer program. We, as coaches, are responsible for providing our children with this safe, fair, fun and positive environment in which to play.

In addition, volunteers need an awareness of the levels of risk protection issues and procedures that are required for AYSO to accept any liability for us. With this in mind, AYSO has mandated that all coaches must complete the Safe Haven Course before assuming coaching responsibilities. You do not need to take the course more than one time; however, you must attend the whole session.

ENROLL today on-line. If you have any questions about Safe Haven, then contact Regional Coach Administrator Bernard Rougerie at brougerie@gmail.com or call 718/216-6432. General Technical registration questions can be directed to support@brooklynayso.org. Click here for the flyer about the May 8, 2010 for Wiz of Oss Spring Tournaments

As most of you know, Player Development was recently adopted as the Sixth AYSO Core Philosophy. Here's a little announcement from AYSO National:

Tournaments Contribute To Player Development
Help Fulfill New AYSO Philosophy

Tournaments are an excellent way to help players improve their soccer skills and fulfill AYSO's newest philosophy - Player Development.

Player Development became the sixth philosophy of AYSO as over two thirds of the Executive Membership voted to add the first new philosophy of the organization in nearly 20 years. It joins Everyone Plays®, Balanced Teams, Open Registration, Positive Coaching and Good Sportsmanship as AYSO's foundation tenets.

The goal of Player Development is to embrace the objective of improving the soccer skills and knowledge of every AYSO player, from Very Important Players (VIPs) to U-19.

The effective date of the new philosophy is Aug. 1, 2009.

Please note that there will be a black, flat nylon bag with AYSO painted on one side. The goals and ball should be placed in this bag at the and of each game date and stored in the corner of the gym. The school's goals are already set up at Packer (U-10 and up).

8. All four gyms (U-8 thru U-19) should have a goal box marked on the floors in blue masking tape (provided to each division's gym early the first Saturday morning), which must be removed at the end of each game date. Blue tape must be passed on to the first coach of the following week's game or left in the goal bags for U-8), unless directed to do otherwise by your Div. Coord.

PLEASE HELP AN AYSO PARENT

Dear Brooklyn AYSO Community,

One of our parents is in URGENT need of a bone marrow transplant. Her name is Jennifer Jones Austin - mother of soccer players Channing (7) and Kennedy (12) Austin. She has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and her chances of surviving the disease are small unless she can undergo a bone marrow transplant within the next few months.

You can help Jennifer by becoming a registered donor with the Be The Match Registry and being tested to determine if you are a compatible match with her. Jennifer is African American and her greatest chance of finding a match is within her own ethnic group.  Out of the 8 million people that make up the registry, only 550,000 of them are African Americans; the Be The Match Registry is in great need of donors of African American descent.  If you are not of African American descent you can still register, there is still a chance that you will match Jennifer or you may match someone else and help save their life. www.icla.org , click on events and then marrow drives.  These drives are being conducted by the registry and will also help Jennifer find a donor.

Donor drives are listed on the Save Jennifer website at http://www.savejenaustin.com/events.phpOn-line registration is another way for people to get tested.  People may register online by going to http://join.marrow.org/JJA1068. Note that the “promo code is JJA1068.  They will receive an at-home testing kit without charge, and have the option of making a monetary donation. The kit contains everything you need to retrieve a testing sample at home. It is quick, painless and easy to do.  Once you complete the sample, you will return it to the registry to be tested, in the enclosed stamped envelope.

Today’s medical technology allows for testing of potential donors as well as actual transplants with little disruption to the life of the donor(s).  Testing is a simple swab of the inside of the cheek.  The actual donor process can be as simple as a giving blood. The most common process, the peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation, is a non-surgical out-patient procedure where the donor gives blood from an arm; a machine separates the blood-forming cells and returns the blood to the donor through the other arm.

Jennifer, her family and friends greatly appreciate all of the support they have received and continue to receive and thank you in advance for all your help.

Please consider attending the drive or registering for the at-home testing kit. The more of us who participate, the greater Jennifer's chances of finding a match.

Thanks,

Ainslie Binder

Commissioner, Region 473

Advice from John Ouelette, AYSO National Coach on inspiring a team that loses

Question: "What advice can you give me on inspiring and encouraging my U-10 team that loses every single game? I believe my players all learn some great skills and have fun, but game days are disappointing."

  • Answer: It's a fact that the final scores at the youth level aren't an indication of which players are becoming better soccer players. Nor do final scores determine how much fun kids are having while they're on the soccer field. But in today's world of organized youth sports - in which children play to an adult audience - the final scorelines can become an issue.

First of all, don't convey any disappointment in the final results to your players. Your players read your body language. If you look upset, they will be more likely to get down on themselves after a loss. Always greet them with a smile when they walk off the field.

If you believe they need encouragement, communicate to them the positives of their performance. If they gave up more goals in the first half, tell them you were proud that they did better in the second half.

Break the game down into periods: "Hey guys, we 'won' the third quarter and we were awesome in the first quarter."

Emphasize the positives. While you're watching the game, keep note of the successful things your team does, and point them out after the game. "That team was really good. But in the fourth quarter we made four passes in a row and almost scored. Beautiful stuff out there!"

And have short conversations individually with your players. Try and remember any good dribbling moves, passes, shots or defensive plays your players make. Go up to each of them and briefly tell them what you saw: "Peggy, you stole the ball from their tall girl and then hit a really nice pass"..."Joe, you almost scored with that shot! That was a good save their keeper made. I couldn't have stopped that!"..."Susi, you used your left foot today. Bravo!"..."Jack, make sure you have a good lunch, because I can't believe how much you ran today!"
