How to volunteer as an adult

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Brooklyn AYSO! Brooklyn AYSO is 100% run by volunteers so THANK YOU on behalf of our coaches, referees, and most importantly our players! Our volunteer opportunities can be found here.

AYSO has specific rules and requirements in order to volunteer with the organization. This document walks you through the steps you will need to take in order to volunteer. The background check may take a number of days to complete and your online training should take less than two non-consecutive hours.

Adult Volunteers MUST complete:

  • Background Check

  • SafeSport Training (with a yearly refresh)

  • AYSO Safe Haven

  • CDC Concussion Training

  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest

  • AYSO Summary of Laws of the Game

  • Core training for your role (coach, referee, etc.)

Step 1: Ensure that you have a user account created at inleague.brooklynayso.org

  • This is where families register players each season and it also serves as the entry point for volunteer registration, training, etc.

  • Do not create a second account for volunteering. Volunteer using the same account you use to sign up your player(s).

Step 2: Register as a volunteer at inleague.brooklynayso.org by clicking on “Volunteer Registration” after you have logged into your account.

  • Click the green button for the current season under “Select Registration Season”

  • Check the box(es) to register as a head coach, assistant coach, referee, team manager, etc. then press “Submit Volunteer Preferences.”

  • These preferences CAN be updated after you have registered players

Step 3: Begin the background check with Sterling Volunteers (if you are a new volunteer or if your background check has expired)

  • After completing the Volunteer Registration process your background check status will automatically be evaluated

  • If necessary, you background check application will be reviewed by Brooklyn AYSO; until then it will appear as “pending”

  • Once approved for the background check process, you will receive an email from Sterling Volunteers to begin the process. Be sure to check that this email does did not get caught by filters!

  • FYI: The background check process can be completed 90 days prior to expiration

In the SafeSport section, review your personal information, then click the “SafeSport link” button. • This training will take you the most time out of all the trainings on the list but the annual refresh is much shorter than the full training.
